We get it. We need a serious altitude adjustment… we are missing the runway terribly but this heat has us thinking outside the box for our photo ops. As always, thank you for reading! Wherever you are, we hope you’re loving life and we’ll see you very soon, next time for real, at the TOP!

When in doubt, polka dot it out.

Location: Hole-in-the-Rock

33.4566° N, 111.9454° W

Temp: 95 degrees.

Duration: 30 minutes

It was a quick jaunt to the top of this beautiful rock. We set out Monday morning to capture the view from the ‘hole’ situated just outside the Phoenix Zoo, as part of Papago Park.

As the sun was rising we viewed the city from both sides making these photos extra fab!

It wouldn’t be a HTR without conversation with fellow hikers and unexpected encounters with critters! Shoutout to the nice gentlemen who took our picture and asked us to go live on their Facebook! It was a sprint down the rock and off to work we went.

Did you know that early inhabitants of this region used and recorded the position of sunlight through the opening to mark the seasons?! Although seasons don’t mean much in AZ, we sure are glad this heat won’t be around forever! Thanks for reading, y’all! We hope you have a polka fun day!

See you at the top,

Aloha

Location: Papago Park (not Hawaii… Made you look!!!)

33.4539° N, 111.9534° W

Temp: 117 degrees.

Duration: 45 Minutes

It was one hot morning in the Phoenix Valley so we planned a little getaway to Papago Park! (literally 2 mins from our apartment…) It wasn’t any cooler there, but we were getting some serious Tropical Hawaiian vibes from the scenery so we rolled with it.

‘A’ merica

Location: A Mountain | Tempe, AZ

33.4283° N, 111.9359° W

Elevation: 1,496

Duration: 37 minutes

If you are at all familiar with the big Universities in Arizona, you can appreciate the rivalry in football and basketball that Arizona State University and The University of Arizona have. Each school has a mountain on its campus with a big concrete A, displaying the school’s colors. The schools hold many traditions around the A and attempt to keep it protected from one another; but enough about that…let’s get down to business.

We left our apartment with $3 and an agenda to 1. get a flag and 2. climb a mountain. After purchasing our flag for $1.08 at the Dollar Tree and plugging the meter for 37 minutes with the change, we were on our way to the TOP with $1 to spare! It’s a pretty short but steep hike up to the lookout where our pictures were taken.  We had to move quick, as our meter had exactly 37 minutes on it so no time to fuss. we changed into our outfits and started snapping photos. We LOVED this view with the city in the background, a more urban approach than our last endeavor.

The mountain was busy and we met a nice boy who had a fancy camera. He offered to take some pictures of us and gave us his business card to follow up. We emailed him at dinner that night for the photos and haven’t heard back! Bummer. Luckily we got a few pics together with our tripod (still mastering the art of that thing) and plenty of cool solo ones. This view was too good to waste.

After the hike we headed to Old Town Scottsdale for dinner and dancing to kick off the Holiday weekend. Happy Independence Day!

Where should we hike next? Let us know!

Camelback

33.5151 N, 111.9619 W

Start: 80 degrees | End: 100 degrees

Duration: 2 Hours and 13 Minutes

6/28/2017

4 AM: BUZZ BUZZ, time to HIKE. the runway! We both described the feeling like waking up for a dance competition. We acted like 7 year old competitive dancers anxious to get dressed up and perform for judges…and that’s just about what we did. After forgetting our $5 Target tripod and turning around to go get it (we didn’t even use it!) we were on our way to the ever so popular, Camelback Mountain. We didn’t think twice about what mountain we would conquer first, I mean it was Wednesday…HUMP DAY! Those humps didn’t seem so fun as we climbed to the top after a record 10 day straight excessive heat warning, not to mention the little breakfast we ate before we hiked (first lesson: eat breakfast.). But as dancers do, we continued on with encouragement and the few almonds J came prepared with.

When we got to the top, it felt like winning 1st place! A little strapped for time, we found a big rock where not many people were in sight and began the WARDROBE. change. There is no secret way of changing at the top of a mountain… you just do it. After moving away from the rock and being in sight of other hikers the comments started. Just so you know, when you are 2,707 feet above ground sound travels…well. Despite the confusion of others, we POSED. on. (lesson two: stilettos and mountains don’t mix)

Meet our friend, Carmen. She approached us shortly after A started snapping photos of J and asked us if she could takeour picture. “Do you want me to take your picture?” – Carmen

Little did we know we had come across a personal photographer. Carmen directed the photo shoot from there – told us how to pose, where to move our heads and body, and how to position our feet. Well, as you can see, she had an eye for photography! Thank you, Carmen!

We quickly changed back, packed up all our things, and began the hike down. The mountain was busy despite the temperature, and we encountered a lovely lady who had taken a spill and A gave her some band aids. We were fortunate to stay on our feet the whole way down and we can’t wait to REPEAT!

Thank you for reading, and we hope you enjoyed our first HTR experience as much as we did! Please comment below with suggestions on where we should hike/what types of outfits you would like to see. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Meet Alexandra!

HEY Y’ALL (I am a wannabe southern bell)!

Don’t I have the coolest roommate ever?!! I remember the day I saw her post on Instagram that said she was moving to AZ (she had no idea I already lived here). I already knew that we had the same love for dance, sunSHINE, hiking, SUNshine, yoga and more SUNSHINE so we were destined to end up in the same state and shortly after, become roommates!

Okieee on to the topic of today…a lot happened before I moved to Arizona 2 years ago (still cannot believe it’s been that long). After growing up in Plymouth, MN and getting my degrees at the University of North Dakota (GO SIOUX!) and Southern Mississippi, I moved to the desert where I began my career as a Speech-Language Pathologist in a pediatric outpatient setting. When I am not working with young children to use alternative and augmentative communication, to be a ‘superfriend’, to eat a more variety of foods, or say their final consonants, I am traveling and spending time with family/friends…which usually involves some mountain and a good IG picture.

img_5849.jpgNext time you hear from us we will have officially Hiked The Runway! In the meantime…

Think about this!

Isn’t life one big fashion show, with everyone at a different point in the hike?

Thanks for reading all y’all!

See you at the top!

Hello, my name is Jillian.

Hi there!

I’m SO excited that you are here and I can’t wait to share hiketherunway‘s adventures with you!

My name is Jillian Messina (nice to meet you!!) and I moved to Arizona about a year ago from Woodbury, Minnesota after graduating from the U of M in Minneapolis. I work for the coolest digital marketing agency here in the Valley, and I love my job.

I’m a former NBA dancer and circus performer, and a current lover of hiking and playing dress up. (& ice cream)

Moving to Phoenix was a choice I made that was heavily influenced by Sunshine and Palm trees, and the absence of snow. What can I say, I like places where it’s summer in the winter.

Thank you so much for reading, and if you want to know more just ask below!

I will leave you for now with a rhyme:

Faith, family and friends are what it’s all about, and I value those things a great amount. Excited to see where this journey goes and where that is, no one knows!

Cheesy, but it made you smile… 🙂

See you at the top!
